Industry collaboration and independent advisory work in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering.

Industry collaboration and independent advisory work in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering.

In parallel with research and teaching at McGill University, Professor Meguid and collaborators participate in selected professional practice projects. These projects focus on situations where careful analysis, independent review, and clear technical communication are important for safe and efficient design.

Engagements are arranged in collaboration with consulting firms, public agencies, and industry partners in Canada, Middle East, and other regions. Work typically builds on the research strengths of Geo-Group in buried infrastructure, ground improvement, and transportation geotechnics.

Short professional training and focused short courses on geotechnical finite element analysis and geosynthetic design can also be arranged upon request. Please refer to the Teaching page for examples.

Main areas of practice

  • Underground structures and tunnel design support.
  • Deep excavations, shafts, and diaphragm wall systems.
  • Ground improvement and reinforcement, including geosynthetics.
  • Geoenvironmental and barrier systems for contaminated sites.
  • Instrumentation, field monitoring, and interpretation of ground response.
  • Independent review and forensic assessment of geotechnical performance.

Illustrative work

Below are selected examples of the types of professional engagements undertaken. Descriptions are presented in general terms to respect confidentiality obligations.

  • Performance assessment of large diameter deep shafts using finite element analysis (PLAXIS, RS2).
  • Evaluation of diaphragm wall behaviour during deep excavation in soft clays and mixed ground conditions.
  • Independent review of design methodologies for geosynthetic reinforcement in embankments and retaining structures.
  • Ground improvement evaluation for problematic soils using preloading, vertical drains, and geosynthetics.
  • Assessment of tunnelling induced ground movements near sensitive infrastructure.
  • Stability evaluation of slopes and rock cuts adjacent to transportation corridors.
  • Interpretation of field instrumentation data for major infrastructure projects (settlement, lateral displacements, pore pressures).
  • Review of geotechnical aspects of foundation design for institutional and commercial buildings.

Modes of engagement

Professional activities are arranged on a project by project basis. Depending on scope and jurisdiction, work can be carried out under independent academic consulting arrangements or through affiliated entities and local partners.

For projects based in the Middle East and neighbouring regions, collaboration with local partners allows efficient coordination of field investigations, laboratory testing, and regulatory requirements, while Geo-Group contributes advanced analysis and technical guidance.
